Until I moved here.
We recently had a "bring-and-share" at church to celebrate the newly "refurbished and modernised premises." I, a new member of this community, wanted to do my part - no slacker sharer but no bringer in me! I was forewarned that potlucks here are basically all cold food, so I put great thought into what dish I should "wow" them with and finally settled on Broccoli Salad, thinking that since all of the ingredients are readily available here (well, mostly - their bacon is more like country ham, but my investigative skills have found a source of American bacon) that it would be the perfect addition.
I eagerly put my salad together and carried it to church - I made a double batch, because I didn't want to be stingy. You wouldn't think salad is heavy, until you carry it a mile uphill. It was okay though, because I was envisioning their pleased faces and palates as they partook after the service.
Upon arrival, I was directed to the hatch to give my prized salad to the ladies overseeing the dinner. As I proudly presented my contribution (among store-bought cold quiches and cheese and crackers) I was met with "Oh - isn't that different . . ." The air was out of me like a balloon.
After church, the potluck commenced. I kept an eye on my dish - it stayed pretty full until the very end when there was no other food left. Then it went like wildfire - hungry people will eat anything. God spared me the "humiliation" of a full dish leftover, but He did remind me that it's just food (broccoli at that), and my pride and boasting should be in Him, not the fact that my efforts or broccoli salad are well-received.
But the one who boasts should boast in this,
that he understands and knows Me -
that I am the LORD,
showing faithful love, justice and righteousness on the earth,
for I delight in these things.
This is the LORD's declaration.
Jeremiah 9:24
