Catching Up: Brussels Sprouts for Christmas?

I have a confession.  I didn't feel very "bloggy" over Christmas.  Partly because I missed my family, partly because the weather made me just want to sleep, and partly because I really didn't have much nice to say so I didn't say anything.  However, due to my blegh-ness you missed out on some interesting information.

Brits eat Brussels sprouts for Christmas.

In fact, they don't just eat them, they actually enjoy them.

Leading up to Christmas, these little green stalks start appearing everywhere.  You can buy fresh Brussels sprouts on the stalk and they call them trees.  I will admit that fresh Brussels sprouts are marginally better than the frozen ones.  And sauteed with a bit of bacon, the taste is much less bitter than the boiled kind.

But, they are still Brussels sprouts.  In America you wouldn't think "Yea! We get to have Brussels sprouts for Christmas!"  It would instead be, "Really?  Why am I being punished by having Brussels sprouts for Christmas?"

I guess I should just be thankful it's not blood sausages that are traditional.  Because there is NO WAY I would even touch those.

While in a green vegetable-deficient state in Ukraine, I caved and bought brussels sprouts. I cooked mine with some bacon bits that Mrs. Linda had given me, and they were really not that bad. However, my apartment was RANK for days!
