Spiritual Applications from Monk

My friend, Jenni, recently introduced me to the television series Monk.  I know, I'm very behind seeing as it ran for eight seasons and it's not on the air anymore.  But, the important thing is that I'm hooked now!

First of all, I think I may be a bit OCD myself after watching the show.  I have more of Mr. Monk's habits than I realized.  I'm especially paranoid about appliances and have to check every morning before I leave the flat that my straightening iron, regular iron, and oven are all turned off.  But, this post isn't about me, it's about an observation that I made.

In the first season of the show, there is an episode entitled "Mr. Monk and the Marathon Man."  At the beginning of the episode Mr. Monk is on the sidelines of a race waiting to catch a glimpse of his running hero, but he gets distracted by a gentleman a few people over whose buttons are mismatched.  He becomes so engrossed in trying to fix the buttons that he completely misses seeing his hero run by, even with Sharona yelling at him the whole time.  As I was watching this, it hit me.  How many times do I focus on the "mismatched buttons" around me instead of looking to see the One that I'm here for?

So, here's my challenge for myself and for you, keep your eyes on the Hero.  Everything else is just mismatched buttons (on a pretty tacky sweater) anyway.

Didn't know that Monk would provoke such profound thought! I watched this episode last week... So true that we often get distracted by trifling things when our eyes and desires should be elsewhere.
