The Art of Sipping

I live in the land of no free refills. Sometimes I don't even think they can fathom the concept. Therefore, you have to learn the art of sipping. You have to make 1 beverage (usually a little less than a single can of coke in the States) last through the entire meal.

Sounds easy . . . right?

Did I mention that we eat in courses most of the time when dining out?

That means a single drink must last through the order taking, the chat time between the order and the starter (if a single person orders a starter, then the whole table has to wait), the chat time between the starter and the main course, the main course, the chat time between the main course and the dessert if anyone orders, the dessert, and then the chat time between dessert and the check.

So all told, that could mean a single drink to last for 3 to 4 hours!!!! Unless, of course, you have really deep pockets.

So, here's how it works. You put your hand on the glass and then remember that there are no refills, so you let go. Repeat this process 9 or 10 times during the first chat time. Then, you can lift the glass to your lips - slowly - and remember that there are no refills and put the glass down - no drink allowed. This occurs during the starter. During the second chat time, you may actually take a sip so small that you almost don't even have to swallow. Continue this throughout the meal, chat time #3, and dessert if anyone has it. Now, if you have anything left you are free to take a normal drink before the check comes. If you don't have anything left, repeatedly lift your glass to try to take a drink and become paranoid that your dining companions think you're weird because there's been nothing left in your glass the last 8 times you've tried.

Don't be afraid to try this at home in preparation for any overseas trips you may have coming your way.

By the way, this applies to tap water as well which is not even widely available.

Who knew dining out could take thought?

Your post totally reminded me of last summer in Krakow. I would order two drinks for a meal most times. It made those times I went to KFC super special since it was one of the few places to get free refills.

I love it! I can just hear your voice as I read this!
When my family went to London years ago, we went into some fast food restaurant that had free refills and slurped to our hearts content. We were so excited! then, of course we went back to trying to SIP!
