Okay, so it may not feel quite like spring yet, but I am choosing to celebrate it anyway. In honor of this auspicious occasion, and the free National Trust preview weekend, some of my friends and I took a road trip to Bodiam Castle. I love it when my driving friends get the itch to travel! Here are some photos for your enjoyment.
Front view of the castle. It was built in approximately 1360. The outside is almost exactly as it appeared at the time, minus part of the gatehouse. Typical medieval architecture includes a square building, with round towers on each corner and square towers in the middle of the walls.
The inside of the castle - only ruins are left. The inside was destroyed during the English Civil War. The nearer wall on the right was probably where the kitchen and great room were located. To the left was the master's chambers and the chapel. FYI - these are the best types of castles to visit, because you can climb all over them and imagine what they must have been like.
One of the "murder holes" that boiling tar would have been poured through during an attack - that's kind of scary. Stones could also be dropped through if needed. I was more concerned about my foot going through.
Half-way up one of the towers looking through several of the rooms. The portcullis to the left is part of the original castle. Wow!
A view from the side. This moat is enormous! The whole castle reminds me of Camelot.
I often feel like I live in a fairy tale when I go sight-seeing - it just gives me so much "scope for the imagination." I can't wait to see what my next adventure will be.
