Crispety, crunchety, peanut-buttery . . .

I had forgotten.

I haven't really been gone that long, only a year and a half. And I have had them from time to time, but I had completely forgotten how good a FRESH Butterfinger candy bar tastes.

The problem is that when you live overseas and get something like that, you become a hoarder. You save it all for later because you know you might not get anymore - at least not for a long, long time. So you save things.

Then you do stupid things like save a cake mix so long that by the time you use it it's six months out of date and doesn't rise. Or save marshmallows so long that they transform into a hard mass the consistency of concrete. Or save your most treasured Baked Cheetos so long that when you open them they are already stale. Yep, we do a lot of crazy things in the name of saving them for later (and this is just the food!).

The last Butterfinger bar I had I'm pretty sure I had hoarded from the day I left America in October 2008 until sometime mid-summer 2009. Needless to say it was a bit stale. Old butterfingers don't really crunch, nor are they crispy. They're more like biting into a wet sponge, only better tasting.

So today, when someone offered me a straight from America Butterfinger bite-size candy bar I couldn't resist. As I took the first bite, it crunched . . . and it was crisp! I made the entire 1-inch square piece of candy last 6 bites. It was great.

Ahhhh . . . between that and the sunshine today, it was a great day.

After reading this, I decided I need to go check the expiration dates on the cake mixes I was saving for "something special." They are ALL expired!!! Hello everybody, my name is Nathan, and I'm a hoarder.

It is so true! I realized a couple of days ago I still have things from my first package, March 2009. With only six months to go, it's time to start eating some of that goodness!
