Remembrance Sunday

Every village has a war
memorial remembering
the fallen soldiers from that area.
 This past Sunday was Remembrance Sunday.  As Americans we celebrate Veteran's Day, but it has an even deeper meaning here, where every family lost someone during World War II and they lived in fear of the air raid sirens for so many years.

At this time of year, people wear red poppies on their lapels to show their commitment to remembering the fallen.

Towns host Remembrance ceremonies at the war memorials and many churches also have a Remembrance service.  There are two minutes of silence at 11:00.  The service is very solemn and traditional.

As I was participating in the Remembrance Sunday service at my church this past week, I was struck by the commitment that the British people have to remembering - including the pledge "We will remember."

As I join with those around me in remembering the sacrifice of the men and women that have given all to give me freedom and liberty I am also reminded to remember the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for me.  So, do you remember?

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5
