This past week it hit me. In the last four years, I've had Thanksgiving in four different countries. And I've made deviled eggs in all four - all with a slightly different flair. So, here's a recap:
2007 Thanksgiving in America
This was a traditional Thanksgiving with the family on Grannie's farm. All normal ingredients (clean large eggs, miracle whip, yellow mustard, paprika) for deviled eggs present and accounted for. Yummy!
2008 Thanksgiving in Czech Republic
My first Thanksgiving away from home. I was assigned/volunteered for the deviled eggs for the company Thanksgiving get together. We needed approximately 100 servings or 50 eggs. I bought them in blocks of 25 off of the shelf (not the refrigerated section) and took them home to wash. It took me three days to boil all of the eggs since my largest pan would only hold 7 eggs and I had a really small stove. No yellow mustard was available, so I had to use Czech mustard, which isn't bad on a sausage, but gives egg stuffing a definitive Eastern European flair. Miracle Whip was substituted with mayonnaise. Thank you Hellmann's for being multi-national (ironically, unopened mayonnaise was in the refrigerated section). Not bad for a first attempt at substituted ingredients.
2009 Thanksgiving in England
My second Thanksgiving away from home. It's not Thanksgiving without deviled eggs, so again I volunteered to bring them to the get-together I attended. This time it only required about 25 eggs. I again purchased my eggs off the shelf in 18s. They still required washing. I was able to boil them in only two batches! And . . . . I was able to find French's yellow mustard! No miracle whip was available, but mayo with a pinch of sugar is a pretty good stand in. Pretty tasty!
2010 Thanksgiving in France
My third Thanksgiving away from home. Yep, deviled eggs again! This time with mayonnaise and a French dijon-y flavor. But, I didn't have to wash the eggs and was able to boil them in one batch. I thought they were good!
Hopefully, Thanksgiving 2011 will be a return to the traditional. And maybe Grannie will teach me her dressing secrets, because I've now decided it's a must as well.
