5 Phrases You'll Probably Never Hear a Brit Say Around Here

1. "I live a few blocks away."
Instead you always live around the corner even if you don't, in fact, live around the corner, you live a few blocks away. I think it's because all of the roads are so higgledy-piggledy instead of laid out in nice squares.

2. "How are you?"
This is replaced by "You all right?" It warms my heart when a few of my friends adapt occasionally just for me.

3. "Let's go sledding."
A sled is called a sledge, so the correct British phrase is "Let's go sledging." Of course for me, it's more like "Let's go baking-sheet-ing" or "Let's go plastic-trash-bagging" seeing as how I don't own a sled(ge).

4. "I'll have iced tea."
Tea is always served hot, with milk or sugar. They cannot believe we would so debase the perfection to add ice to it.

5. "It's starting to stick!!"
Here, snow doesn't stick, it lies. In some ways this makes perfect sense - although I think it's actually the weather man that lies the most (That was for you Dad).

Things you WILL hear a Kentuckian say:

1. School is canceled today (even though there is only a 1/2 inch dusting of snow on the ground).

2. I am from ___________ County. Kentuckians never tell you what city/town they are from, only the county.

Nicely done.

I'm learning to speak British in Ukraine, rather than Russian, apparently. I kept wondering why everyone kept asking if I wanted to go sledging...I was thinking, "Like the hammer?"
