Jane Austen Revisited

This past weekend, we had a ladies road trip to visit Jane Austen spots. Although I had already visited the house, it was fun to visit some other sights as well.

Just in case you weren't sure why you were visiting a nice sign was provided to remind you.

The manor that her brother lived in that allowed him to offer she, her mother, and sister the cottage down the lane as a place to live. Does this remind anyone else of Sense and Sensibility?

The Parish church that was on the estate. Her brother filled the post of vicar. Jane's mother and sister (both named Cassandra) are buried in the cemetery here.

Winchester Cathedral - where Jane is buried. Jane lived her last few years in Winchester.

The stained glass window above the East Door. Pretty neat story about the window: During the reformation under Oliver Cromwell, this window was smashed since it was part of a Catholic cathedral. The parishioners saved the pieces of glass. After 1660 when the monarchy was restored, they all brought their various scraps together and recreated this new window using the original pieces. There are a few intact panes remaining from the original.

Twelfth century tiles in the cathedral. Wow.

Fresco from the twelfth century in one of the chapels. When men returned from The Crusades they would often design frescoes such as this based on their memory of the church in Jerusalem. It's pretty amazing that this one has survived.
