British food has a bad reputation of being bland. And really, it's a fairly accurate assessment to my American taste buds. I always need more salt. Sometimes it's salt, eat a layer, salt again, eat another layer, and so forth. In fact, I'm ashamed to admit, I don't even try my food at a restaurant before I salt anymore because it's just a given that copious amounts will be needed.
That brings me to my cultural difficulty. Since "salt and pepper travel together" I am always able to avail myself of both. Problem - usually, the salt is put in the shaker with one hole and the pepper in the shaker with three. My brain just can't seem to accept this paradigm shift from American thinking. Hello, everyone knows that you need more salt than pepper! And unfortunately, I can't even look at the holes to see which one isn't black because they often use white pepper.
Sigh . . . I have almost made the cruet mistake enough to acquire a taste for pepper, never one of my favorite seasonings.
So, if any of you want to pull a mean switcheroo and be slightly British at the same time, switch your salt to the three hole and your pepper to the five hole shakers. Then let me know how many of your friends choose the wrong one.
