Wanted: A Family

Last night as I was baby-sitting, ahem, "hanging out," with some tweens of a colleague I was reminded of how much fun having a family is. As I returned to my flat (via a 5 minute car ride to the train station, 10 minute wait on the platform, 30 minute train ride, and a 10 minute walk) I had time to reflect a bit - the sunset streaming past your window seat on the train will do that to you. It was so nice to interact: to ask how their day went, to find out about the cool new school they start next term, to watch football (soccer) for 90 minutes when I don't even like it because they do and actually enjoy it because it's fun to watch them watch it, to hear the sounds of someone else upstairs, to marvel at how polite they are, to appreciate that they made burnt popcorn and wanted to share it with me . . . all of these things and more. And at the end of the day (and it was a long one) to feel energized as a result of investing in others in a family environment rather than just the normal tiredness of a full day.

All that to say, the song was right - one is a lonely number. I hope that one day God will bring a family my way. Until then, anyone need any baby-sitting done? All I charge is supper.
